Dr. Malai Haniti binti Sheikh Abdul Hamid

Dr. Malai Haniti Sh. Abd. Hamid is an Associate Professor at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Her research interest lies primarily in the synthesis, characterization and biological studies of sulfur-containing Schiff bases. She is also interested in synthetic methodology that involves simple transformations of one functional group to another that can be applied to natural product synthesis. A new area of research interest is on metal organic framework. She was a visiting scientist for six months at the School of Chemistry, University of Glasgow in 2014. The awards Malai Haniti has received are “Penghargaan Hari Guru (Special Mention) 2015”, Excellent Service Medal (PIKB), UBD Research Excellence Award for Early Career (2014) and SCI Graduate Symposia Southern Meeting (First prize) in Southampton (2008).


She graduated with a BSc (Hons.) in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham in 1998 and an MSc in Advanced Organic Chemistry from the University of East Anglia in 1999. In January 2009 she earned her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bath.

Green Synthesis of Novel Schiff Bases

The introduction of new therapeutic agents to act against various diseases is very essential nowadays due to the emergence of diseases. Schiff bases are very potential compounds which can be effective against the problem of drug resistance and they have been known to be capable of exhibiting a wide range of biological potentials such as anticancer, antibacterial and antifungal. Recently, much attention has been focused on Schiff bases derived from amino derivatives such as S-alkyl/aryl esters of dithiocarbazic acids. The main aim of this project is to explore on the green synthesis of novel straight chain and cyclic Schiff bases using a variety of carbonyl compounds and amino derivatives.
