ABOUT ME

Frank Dhont (PhD Yale University, MHum Gadjah Mada University, MA Lund University)

Frank Dhont is Senior Lecturer in the Institute of Asian Studies. He is historian of Indonesia and Southeast Asia. He is founder and chair of the International Indonesia Forum.

His major research interests include the reactions of both indigenous rulers and ordinary people to Japanese colonialism in the Netherlands Indies during World War II. He is also interested in the history of both World Wars in Asia and the spread of nationalism, especially in the context of colonial empires in Asia. He is currently working on the manuscript of Outlasting Colonialism: Socio-political Change in the Javanese Principalities under the Japanese Occupation of Indonesia during World War II and various other projects.

His book publications include: co-edited with Tracy Wright Webster and Rommel A. Curaming Between the Mountain and the Sea: Positioning Indonesia (Yogyakarta: Gadjah Mada University Press, 2013); co-edited with Rommel A. Curaming Education in Indonesia: Perspectives, Politics and Practices (Yogyakarta: FIS Press, 2012); co-edited with Thomas J. Conners, Mason Hoadley and Adam Dean Tyson Social Justice and Rule of Law: Addressing the Growth of a Pluralist Indonesian Democracy (Semarang: Diponegoro University Press, 2011); co-edited with Kevin Ko, Thomas J. Conners and Mason Hoadley Pancasila’s Contemporary Appeal: Re-Legitimizing Indonesia’s Founding Ethos (Yogyakarta: Sanata Dharma University Press, 2010); co-edited with Kevin Fogg and Mason Hoadley Indonesian Identity: Towards an Inclusive Democratic Indonesian Society: Bridging the Gap between State Uniformity and Multicultural Identity Patterns (Yogyakarta: Atma Jaya University Press, 2009). He also published Nasionalisme Baru intelektual Indonesia Tahun 1920-an (Yogyakarta: Gadjah Mada University Press, 2005) and various articles.
