RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research is directed at improving our understanding of the origin, functioning and maintenance of plant biodiversity. This involves combining evolutionary, ecological and genomic approaches, in various ecosystems in the temperate, subtropical and tropical zones. As focal taxa I target plant families with global/pantropical distribution ranges that form some of the largest and most complex species groups known to science. These families are integral components of complex and hyperdiverse plant communities which perform crucial ecosystem roles but overall, remain poorly known and are beyond the scope of sustainable use practices and conservation action. By combining traditional taxonomic approaches with the latest advances in genomics, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and evolutionary reconstruction, I aim to make these groups accessible for further research, conservation and sustainable use by revealing their evolutionary histories and relationships, genomic divergence and ecological potential for adaptation and rapid speciation.
